While my work reflects my journey through different spaces and countries, it's ultimately more about my relationship with the paint than the subject itself. I blend graphic design elements from my business background with textural strokes and neon colors to create a world that feels both familiar and strange digitally frozen yet warmly alive.
Each layer is applied and dried before the next begins, with entire layers sometimes buried beneath others hidden in time forever. Working primarily in large formats, I invite viewers not only into unfamiliar landscapes but also into the gestural expressionism behind each stroke. By creating both abstract and realistic forms through every drip, splatter, and brushstroke, I aim to celebrate the medium itself.

Andrew Modlin is a Los Angeles-based artist whose work explores the tension between memory and media, the digital and the organic. After earning his BFA from UCLA, he went on to co-found MedMen, where he redefined cannabis retail through immersive design.
Despite his success in business, he returned to painting full-time, translating quick iPad sketches from his travels into richly layered compositions. His current work blends vibrant color, digital motifs, and expressive mark-making to evoke landscapes that are at once real, remembered, and imagined.
Full Bio
As a neo-modernist, particularly one following in the representational – or at least pre-abstract – models of Matisse and Picasso, Modlin has dedicated himself to a manner of painting in which the qualities of the paint itself determine the impact of the picture on the eye. That is to say, Modlin’s renditions of natural and domestic sites do not pull us in with their subject matter so much as with their colors, their forms, their compositions, and their textures. We see the paint before we see what’s painted.
